This years’ MLK Winter Classic had a few firsts for the NGHL…

  • We were in 5 states – Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. That was a lot of ground to cover and we couldn’t have done it without the support of our rink managers, the rink GMs, scorekeepers, and local families who stepped up to help.
  • We held a 10U/12U showcase, something we’ll do more of next year.

What we learned…

  • Weather reports vary in their veracity and our parents are expert snow shovelers. Families who came to Buffalo wrapped up their experience with a snowstorm that tested everyone’s grit. Thankfully, Buffalo DOT were pros and got the main roads cleared quickly, and refs, scorekeepers, and parents came with a “go the flow” attitude, drove carefully, and our games went on.
  • Families in Nashville were faced with the prospect of an ice storm, something southern cities aren’t as equipped to handle as our northern cities. Although some accumulation did happen, families made their way to the rink.
  • Team managers were on top of their game – sharing communications, managing plans, and keeping skaters and parents on schedule.
  • Medals for our youngest champs are a great addition to a team banner.

We were fortunate enough to have Matt from MS Films at our 16U-19U event in Providence. Matt’s hockey videos are pretty amazing.
